Meter

Definition: Meter is not how much you run in physical education at school. Meter in a poetry is pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.

Significance:

Without meter, we would all read words differently. Meter is there for us to read words or speed in the same way. There are many kinds of meter such as pentameter, tetrameter, dimeter, etc.

Rhyme

Definition: The repetition of same or smiliar sounds at the end of each lines. There are many types of rhymes (feeling of poem) For example, ball rhymes with the word fall.








Examples:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the King's horses, And all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again!



Significance: Rhymes is what makes a funny poem funny. Rhymes is like the whole emotion and action of the writing. Rhymes alway have a solution in the end.

Rhythm

Definition: A strong repeating movement or pattern that represents or the beat of the poem. Rhythm is measured in feet or many syllables.






Examples:
By the shore of Gitchie Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
At the doorway of his wigwam,
In the pleasant Summer morning,
Hiawatha stood and waited



Significance: There are different feelings and emotion in poetry. A change of rhythm may change the whole background and emotion of the poem. For example, changing the rhythm of a happy poem may turn it into a depressing poem.

Onomatopoeia




Definition: A word that imitates a source of sound made by an object or person.









Examples:
" Bang!"


"Smash"


"Splash"


"Boom"


SignificanceOnomatopoeia is everywhere! If you are reading this, drop your mouse. Or, bang your head on the screen.That's an onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia is basically everything in the world that make sounds.

Personification





Definition: A figurative language that gives human traits to a non-living thing. (Looks, feelings, action, etc.)




Example:


"The stars danced playfully in 


the moonlit sky."


"
The run down house appeared depressed."




Significance: Personification gives interesting details to 


non-living things. For example, "time passed by like a shark."


That's why people talk about non-living like they talk about a 


real person.

Imagery


 



Definition: Imagery is details that shows the background of the writing. Imagery connects to your five senses: Sight, smell, taste, sound, and touch. 


There's five types of imagery. There are visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile imagery.


Example
"I took a walk around the world to
Ease my troubled mind
I left my body laying somewhere
In the sand of time
I watched the world float to the dark
Side of the moon
I feel there is nothing i can do."


Significance: Imagery is so important to us. Without imagery, the world would be completely dark with no smell, taste, sound, or feelings. In poetry or writings, you'll have no idea what the it's about because there's no imagery. No imagery equals no life.

Simile

Definition: A figurative language that compares two unlike thing using "like" or "as".






Example:


"Coffee is like friendship: rich and warm and strong."








Significance: We use simile everyday in our life. Like metaphor, we use it without noticing it. For example, "Dang! He's a beast at this !" Without simile, we can't really compare two unlike things. Simile is like a part of our life. Writing often contains simile.

Repetition





Definition: A repetition is something that keeps repeating. In a poem, stanza often contains repetition.




Example:

I’m nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody too?
Then there’s a pair of us-don’t tell!
They’d banish us you know
From ‘I’m nobody! Who are you?” By Emily Dickinson


Significance: Repetition is what makes things interesting! Without repetition, there will be not rap or songs. Many modern songs has repetition. 

Tone


 

Definition: Tone is the sound quality or attitude of the person that is speaking. Tone can be formal, serious, calm, or joyful. 




Example


 If the child responded with a whiney "I'm going to the store!" 

because he or she could simply not be bothered with 

answering the mother's question, then the entire meaning of 

the situation changes.

Significance: Tone is what makes the writing sounds like. 

It gives us clues about what the background is. Every single 

literature writing has a tone. If the tone sounds evil, then the 

tone of the writing may be depressing.

Interpretation


Definition: Interpretation is something that explains or provides the meaning of the subject. Everybody might have a different interpretation on something.












  Example
  "And yet don't look too good, nor talk to wise"


   The interpretation is don't try to make yourself look too good. Don't    be cocky.


  Significance: Interpretation is what makes us think in a different point of view with other people. Every person may look at things differently. Everything has interpretation.

Metaphor

Definition: A figurative language that implies comparison between two unlike things that has something common or similar. Extended metaphor is a metaphor that compares on multiple things instead of two.


Example:

-The detective listened to her tales with a wooden face.

-She was fairly certain that life was a fashion show.


Significance: Metaphor is so wonderful that we use it everyday in our lifes. People use millions of metaphor every single day without noticing it. You may think that you use metaphor once or twice a day. Probably, you're using metaphor right now. Metaphor is the reason why we laugh when someone makes a joke. Joke often contains metaphor. This is why metaphor is so important to us everyday.

Speaker



Definition: In a poem, the speaker is not always the person that is speaking or reading the poem. The speaker can be a first person point of view character, which is the poet. Or, it can be a character that is created in the poem.

Example:
The boy killed himself,
I want him back..

Speaker: is the narratour.
the one telling the story
.




Significance: Without a speaker, there would be no theme or action. Basically, there's nothing to talk about in the poem. The speaker is just like the character for the poem.

Symbol

Definition: A symbol is a word or a phrase that represent something else. In a poem, symbol can be really small but it express a big part of the poetry. Sometimes, it can be the whole background of the poetry. 

Example: 
A Sick Rose” by William Blake, 1794
Rose, thou art sick!
The invisible worm
That flies in the night,
In the howling storm,
Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.

Significance: Without symbol, you will have no clue what the background of the poetry. Poetry would be lame and boring if the poetry doesn't have symbols. Symbol is present something else, its what makes you think of a different view.



Couplets


Definition: A couplet is a pair of lines that has the same length or rhymes. Couplet is only two lines, just like a real couple.


Example:
 I like to play with my cat
 He likes to get in a hat


Significance: Without couplet, there won't be any poetry that express or talks about love. Couplet is really short but it can define a strong feeling or actions.

Stanza

Definition:A stanza is a paragraph or few lines that forms into a part of  the poem. Stanza can be lengthy, rhythmical, or have a really weird beat. 

   
Significance: Without stanza, a poem wouldn't be a poem anymore. Basically, stanza is the main part of the poem. Stanza is what divides the poem in many different parts. Every part of the poem is a stanza. Sometimes, you can make the poem even more interesting by adding more stanza. Stanza is really important to poetry.
