Symbol

Definition: A symbol is a word or a phrase that represent something else. In a poem, symbol can be really small but it express a big part of the poetry. Sometimes, it can be the whole background of the poetry.

Example:
A Sick Rose” by William Blake, 1794
Rose, thou art sick!
The invisible worm
That flies in the night,
In the howling storm,
Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.

Significance: Without symbol, you will have no clue what the background of the poetry. Poetry would be lame and boring if the poetry doesn't have symbols. Symbol is present something else, its what makes you think of a different view.
